Energy Saving Products
The best way to save energy at home is by buying the proper energy saving products and using them intelligently.  There are some strategies that require a large investment to save money on electricity bills.  This page will focus on strategies that are easy to implement and still save on electricity.  These can be split up into the following categories:

Light bulbs:  Replace any incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent ones right away. The types you want to get are called compact fluorescent bulbs or CFL. They use one fifth of the energy in incandescent light bulbs and they last up to fifteen times longer.  You can use our lighting cost calculator to determine energy savings.

Ceiling Fans: Use ceiling fans whenever possible instead of an air conditioner for cooling.  A ceiling fan uses 10 times less energy than a small window air conditioning unit uses.

Window Air conditioners:  If you going to use a window air conditioner, purchase one with high EER or  SEER values.  EER and SEER are the ratios used to define how energy efficient an air conditioner is. The higher the number, the better.  It should be higher than 10 EER or 13 SEER.

Electricity Bills: You can check if your utility company has measures to save electricity. For example, the utility company Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) from California offers rebates for purchasing  Energy Star labeled products. There are also federal tax credits available for using geothermal heat pumps and solar power systems that you can take advantage of with free e-file services.

Curtains:  Place curtains over all windows around the house. During the winter months, you want to keep your curtains open on all eastern windows in your home. The morning sun provides and incredible amount of free heat that will considerably lower your gas bill. During spring and summer months, close the curtains for all western windows in your home.

What You Can Do At Home
Educate your family on energy conservation practices like turning off electrical appliances and lights when they’re not being used. Simple things you can do to reduce electricity consumption in your home is to use the clothesline instead of a dryer to dry your clothes, wash your clothes with cold water instead of hot water and wait for a full load before washing.
